How We Ended Up Owning a Gym in the Heart of Waterdown

(And Why It Feels Like Everything Led Us Here)

If you had told either of us a few years ago that we’d become the co-owners of a fitness studio in Waterdown, we probably would’ve laughed.

Not because fitness wasn’t important in our lives, it absolutely was. But because we never imagined we would be building a community-driven gym, shaping culture, and creating a space where people of all backgrounds could feel at home.

But life has a way of nudging you toward the right path, even before you see it clearly.

Hilary’s Path: Looking for Something More Than a Workout

Before Free2Be Fitness became part of my world, I was like many people in Waterdown: someone trying to stay active, rebuild confidence, and carve out a little part of the day that felt like mine.

I loved workouts that made me feel strong — strength training, intervals, anything that challenged me just enough to feel proud afterward.

But something was always missing.

Most gyms felt impersonal.

No one knew my name.

No one noticed when I showed up on the hard days.

Deep down, I wanted something different:

A fitness space that felt welcoming and human.

A place where people were seen, supported, and encouraged to grow and not just counted as memberships.

Waterdown has this quiet culture of people supporting people. It shows up in local businesses, at community events, in everyday interactions. I wanted a fitness studio, a gym, that reflected that spirit.

A place built on:

  • Community over competition
  • Consistency over perfection
  • Belonging over ego

The idea of buying a gym didn’t feel realistic at first. It started as a whisper… then grew louder.

When I walked into Free2Be for the first time, I felt the spark — the warmth, the opportunity, the soul of a community-first fitness space.

And even though I wasn’t initially stepping in as a coach, I knew I was meant to be part of this.

Martin’s Path: From Athlete to Coach to Builder

My story is a bit more direct.  Driven, disciplined, and rooted in the belief that hard work transforms people.

I’ve spent years running, lifting, training, learning, failing, and coming back stronger. Fitness shaped my life, but coaching reshaped my purpose.

I’m drawn to helping people find their next level whether they’re beginners, seasoned athletes, or somewhere in between. I love showing people that they can do more than they think. Watching confidence grow rep by rep is what fuels me every day.

Becoming a business owner?

That came from wanting to build something real in the community I live in.

A gym where coaching actually matters.

Where effort is valued.

Where people feel supported, not judged.

Where strength, physical and mental, grows from the inside out.

When I brought up Free2Be into the conversation with Hilary, the vision became clear.

This wasn’t just a gym.

It was a space with heart and potential.

It felt like home for us.

Why We Chose Free2Be

Free2Be had everything we cared about:

✔ A loyal community

✔ A welcoming atmosphere

✔ Coaches who genuinely care

✔ Members who show up for each other

✔ The potential to grow into something truly special

We didn’t buy this gym to change its identity — we bought it to elevate it.

Free2Be Fitness reflects everything we believe in:

authenticity, connection, smart coaching, and creating a space where everyone — men, women, beginners, athletes, young, older — feels like they belong.

What We’re Building Here

Our vision is simple and strong:

🏋️‍♂️ A small-but-mighty Waterdown gym where everyday people become athletes.

🏃‍♀️ A place people of all backgrounds and abilities (women, moms, men, cyclists, runners, lifters, and beginners) train side by side.

💪 A community where people feel supported, not intimidated.

🤝 A studio where your name matters and your effort matters more.

🔥 A team of coaches who teach, challenge, support, and care.

🌱 A space that helps people grow physically, mentally, and socially.

Whether someone comes in to get stronger, lose weight, improve mobility, gain confidence, or simply feel good again; we want them to walk out the door proud of what they have done.

Why This Gym Matters to Us

Owning a micro gym in Waterdown isn’t just business.

It’s pride.

It’s responsibility.

It’s purpose.

We get to coach our neighbours, welcome new families into the community, support people through tough seasons, and build something meaningful where we live.

Our families are part of this.

Our community is part of this.

Our hearts are in this.

So… How Did We End Up Owning a Gym in Waterdown?

Because life nudged us.

Because the community inspired us.

Because purpose guided us.

And because once we saw what Free2Be Fitness could become, we knew we had to build it.

We are here to create a studio that reflects Waterdown: strong, welcoming, supportive, down-to-earth, and full of potential.

And if you are looking for a genuine, community-first fitness studio that blends strength, conditioning, spin, mobility, running, and real coaching…
